Are you ready? Less than two weeks of sleeps before the Floodplain Management Australia 2025 Annual National Conference in Melbourne! I am excited to let you know that the last minute finishing touches are being made and the conference is shaping up to be a fantastic event that brings together our flood risk management family for FMA’s annual flagship event. I am pleased to advise that we are looking like around 420 people being registered for our first FMA conference in Victoria.
The latest Conference Program is available on the FMA Conference Website with just over 100 presentations across 4 streams over the 3 days from Wednesday 14 May to Friday 16 May. There are 2 half day pre-conference Workshops on Tuesday 13 May, technical tours on the Wednesday and of course, our social events on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday nights. As you are probably aware, I am a strong advocate for improving community flood awareness with the importance of a close collaboration between technical flood practitioners and communication and engagement specialists. I am particularly interested in projects that successfully target young people in ‘flood and disaster risk education’ through schools and the school
curriculum. Two such projects recently caught my eye:

The ‘Are
you prepared?’ Card Game has been developed by The National Centre for Resilience at the University of Glasgow in Scotland. The card game is a tool for sparking conversations within classrooms and communities around natural hazards in Scotland. It aims to promote learning around some of the simple steps that can be taken to prepare, stay safe and recover from hazardous weather events. The game is a colourful and
engaging resource designed for children aged 6-12 years. It is planned to distribute a game pack to every state primary school across Scotland.

The ‘Sea Level Rise Game’ is a board game designed to educate young people about the impact of sea level rise, particularly in the Netherlands, which is highly vulnerable to flooding. The game, developed by Nieske Vergunst at Utrecht University, allows players to explore different scenarios and make decisions about how to manage rising sea levels in the Netherlands to the year 2080. Participants of the game are divided into two teams: the Sea Level
team, whose decisions influence the extent of sea level rise and the Solution Level team, whose decisions determine how society responds to rising sea levels. Can’t wait to see you at the conference! Sue Ribbons FMA President
