FMA Meets NSW Planning Minister

FMA President Ian Dinham and Executive Officer Glenn Evans met with NSW Minister for Panning The Hon Rob Stokes, Senior Advisor Anna Chubb and Department of Planning and Environment Executive Director Alex O’Mara in September.

Items discussed included the need for a Natural Hazards Sepp, operation of the Codes SEPP, LEP Clauses and input of flood information at planning study levels. Mr Dinham said the meeting was very positive, and the FMA offered to work with the Department on these matters.

Land Use Planning Director Paul Grech said the FMA’s Land Use Planning Policy Position Statement provides a basis for resolution of these matters which have been raised in submissions by the FMA. Mr Grech was unable to attend the meeting but said that he and Ms O’Mara have arranged an information session with Department of Planning and Environment staff in October.

The briefing will provide an overview of best practice flood risk management and its relationship with town planning, current issues and suggestions on how to deal with them.

Mr Dinham said the American Conference had about 380 attendees, was more technically oriented than our FMA Conferences, and included up to nine concurrent workshop sessions.

“Our American colleagues were very keen to learn how we manage flood risk in Australia, and each country certainly can benefit from the experiences of the other” Mr Dinham said. “The inclusion of numerous workshops during the Californian conference was very successful, and I would like to explore similar opportunities for our future conferences.”
