International attendance numbers at the 2017 FMA National Conference will be boosted with the announcement that a delegation of 15 flood professionals from Viet Nam will be participating as part of an Australia Awards Fellowship.

The program entitled Floodplain Risk Management and Climate Change - Capacity Building in Viet Nam will be hosted by the University of Technology-Sydney with support from the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, through AusAID. The group will also undertake site visits of flood mitigation projects and attend a lecture program at the UTS during their three week stay in Australia.

FMA President Ian Dinham said that inclusion of the FMA Conference in Newcastle as the centre-piece of the delegation’s study tour is acknowledgement of the national and international standing FMA Conferences have developed. “The delegation will include professionals from government agencies, academic institutions, private sector companies and research institutions from Viet Nam. We look forward to this exciting opportunity to share our experience and establish new long-term partnerships with yet another group of international colleagues.”

Press Release: The El-Nino Has Ended + Flooding Returns
Image

21 July 2016

The widespread heavy rain and flooding experienced in Tasmania, New South Wales and Queensland over the last two months may be unseasonable but should not be unexpected.

Floodplain Management Australia (FMA) President Ian Dinham said “The El Nino has ended and we are seeing the usual scenario where flooding then occurs. Floods are a fact of life in Australia, and our communities need to be better protected and prepared to reduce the economic and social costs of floods.

“Climate change forecasts indicate that the likelihood of flooding will increase with rising global temperatures. The threat of flood is not dissipating, and programs to reduce flood risks must be supported.

Mr Dinham said communities with flood levees, such as Launceston and Lismore, have fared well during recent floods, and this type of infrastructure needs to be available to more towns across the country.

“Our communities must also understand how to ensure the safety of their families during times of extreme weather, by being adequately prepared, following the directions of emergency personnel, and never driving through flood waters.”

Flooding is the most costly, yet manageable of natural disasters with recent estimates costing Australia over $560 million a year.

Floodplain Management Australia brings together experts from across Australia and overseas to help build a more flood resilient nation. Members include over 120 councils, catchment management authorities, businesses, and professionals involved in urban and rural flood risk management.

FMA Membership - Thank You

Over the past month, FMA has welcomed new Professional Members, and a new Student Member. While we do not list our Professional, Individual or Student Members on our website or in our Flyers for privacy reasons, we wish to bring attention to the importance of their involvement in FMA.

Every Member of FMA is critical to its expansion and betterment, as without our Members we would not be able to undertake our important activities, offer educational courses, meetings and Conferences, or represent your interests in the responsible management and development of Australia’s floodplains.

We wanted to take a moment to thank every Member of Floodplain Management Australia for the support and contributions you provide. Our Membership is expanding, not only by numbers, but geographically across the country. This expansion is critical to the national direction FMA is taking as the leading voice of floodplain risk management in Australia.

You make us stronger, and if you know of anyone who would benefit from FMA Membership, please direct them to http://www.floods.org.au/site/membership.

Congratulations Lake Macquarie City Council

FMA Member Lake Macquarie has been acknowledged as developing the ‘Best National Case Study in Coastal Adaptation’ at the 2016 Climate Change Adaptation Conference in Adelaide.

The Marks Point and Belmont South Local Adaptation Plan was developed over two years by Council with assistance from the NSW Office of Environment and Heritage and substantial community input. The plan identifies a long-term strategy and 10 year Action Plan to prepare for and respond to increased levels of flooding and lake level rise.

Lake Macquarie Council’s innovative land use planning was previously acknowledged at the 2014 FMA-NRMA Insurance Flood Risk Management Project of the Year Awards when Council received a Highly Commended Award for its 'Development Guidelines for Resilient Housing in Lake Macquarie' project. The guidelines give builders and developers design options for homes that can be adapted to higher flood levels and increased flood frequencies resulting from the effects of rising sea levels.

QUT: Australian Designed and Made Flood Barriers

A Queensland University of Technology (QUT) team of students has designed a portable flood barrier system that will go into production in Queensland.

The team of four students (Floodline), made up of Hyun Wook Cho, Narisson Irlen, Connor Crawford and Jack Gurr, took part in a competition to present ideas for a temporary levy Sydney based company Flood Solutions Advisory Group (FSAG).

The brief provided to students was to design a flood barrier system that could be easily and quickly deployed to flood-prone areas, with high usability and maintenance values for the communities.

It had to offer a competitive and cost-effective value proposition in comparison to other systems on the market, and be viable for local manufacturing using local materials.

FSAG will take the Floodline concept to production prototypes and put them into simulated flood conditions at their test facility in Sydney and afterwards, negotiate production with Queensland based steel fabricators.

To read more about Floodline’s concept, visit https://www.qut.edu.au/news/news?news-id=105615.
