A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT
|
To my fellow Flyer readers, I would like to extend an invitation your way to the Floodplain Management Australia National Conference at
Gold Coast next month.
Many of you have already registered, and I am very pleased to say, planning on giving a presentation at one of our many informative plenary sessions. So far, we have over 300 delegates registered for our week-long FRM
event! But for those of you still on the fence, there is still time!
The FMA Conference has been held for over 50 years and is the most respected flood risk management event in Australia.
The theme of the Conference is “Waterways of Success: Developing flood resilience in our communities”, with focus on Australian and international achievements in flood risk management, with practical examples from the Gold Coast’s
network of waterways, rivers, creeks, lakes, canals and coastline.
I know that you can contribute a great deal to our Conference, with your own practical experience and flood risk management expertise.
So, take this opportunity and join your peers at the best flood risk management conference in the country.
I hope to see you at Gold Coast – it is an event not to be missed.

STERNBECK MEDAL - WILL YOU BE THIS YEAR'S WINNER? |
|
Will you presenting a paper at our National Conference in May? Would you like to win the most coveted award at the Conference? Harold Sternbeck was a member of the FMA Executive from 1972 to 2009. During his time on the Executive Committee, Harold held the positions of Chairman, and Deputy Chairman, and led many deputations to lobby various Federal and State Government ministers for better floodplain management funding. In 2000, in recognition of Harold's extensive service to FMA, and his prowess as a persuasive public speaker, FMA established the Harold Sternbeck Medal to be presented at the FMA Conference, held annually. This Medal is
awarded for the best paper presented which demonstrated excellence of the highest order. Past winners and their presentations include: 2017 – Dr. Raymond Laine: Bring the
Marshmallows – New Engagement Technologies Stoking Flood Conversations 2016 - Allan Gear: Of Doubts and Flooded Drains 2015 - David Webber and Elspeth Rae: Reliance Towards Resilience - Involving community in the planning process Please visit floods.org.au for the full list of past winning presentations.

FMA PRESIDENT AT FLOOD COP WORKSHOP |
|
FMA President Ian Dinham attended the recent Flood Community of Practice (Flood CoP) Adoption and Application of Water Futures – Expert Workshop in Brisbane (pictured above). The workshop was facilitated by Flood CoP’s Peit Filet and follows the outcomes generated by the original planning charette and the ensuing Water Futures publication. After a presentation by leading architect, James Davidson, the workshop split into groups to discuss how the guiding principles in the book could be put into practice and who would benefit. The Water Futures book illustrates floodplain management strategies in a “user friendly” manner which can be understood by anyone. The theme emerging from the work groups indicated an overarching “whole of catchment” approach. The book is very much in harmony with the guiding principles of FMA in terms of the whole concept of “floodplain management” rather than just floods in isolation. Mr. Dinham said “It was great to see the support for this common sense approach to catchment and floodplain management.” For a roundup of the insights and strategies discussed during the workshop, visit the Flood CoP Past Events Webpage.

AR&R STRUCTURE BLOCKAGE TOOL - USER FEEDBACK SOUGHT |
|
The revised Australian Rainfall and Runoff (ARR) guideline was released in late 2016, and contains a new section on the blockage of hydraulic structures for flood simulation. Blockage of hydraulic structures can have a very significant impact on their performance, and influence
flood behaviour both upstream and downstream. The new blockage procedure was formulated after several stages of research and investigation, and is now found in Book 6 Chapter 6 of the ARR (2016) guideline (arr.ga.gov.au/arr-guideline). In early 2018, FMA Professional Member, Paul Ollett of HydraLinc
presented the new ARR blockage procedure on the Gold Coast for Stormwater Queensland, and in Christchurch for the Water New Zealand Modelling Symposium. In order to illustrate the procedure, HydraLinc’s in-house spreadsheet tool was presented, where base parameters are specified, and the tool then automates the remaining calculations in a series of steps that follow the ARR procedure. Upon request, the blockage tool has now been made freely available to the industry as a beta release. User feedback is sought by end of June 2018, with the tool planned to be finalised by end of August. To access
the beta version visit www.hydralinc.com/stuff, and see the tool’s Overview page to provide feedback.
