A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT
|
Another year, another flood.
With flash flooding in Far North Queensland resulting from Tropical Cyclone Owen in December, residents spent the New Year cleaning up yet again. Extra hazards were evident with Police near Tully coming across a crocodile sitting near the middle of the road.
Meanwhile in NSW, areas affected were in the south of the state including the Riverina, South West Slopes, Snowy Mountains and Central West Slopes, as well as the ACT. Sydney copped another major storm and flash flooding with insurance claims already exceeding $80 million.
In Victoria, heavy rain caused flash flooding and building damage in inner Melbourne after parts of regional Victoria experienced flooding in December.
Welcome to 2019!
Just this week we have intense monsoon rain and flash flooding in North Queensland. And there's no doubt more to come with the cyclone season still ahead of us.
But as we continue to come together as a network of strong, innovative and knowledgable flood professionals through FMA, we are actively making this nation safer and more resilient.
I look forward to another action packed year with all of you in our great FMA network.
Happy New Year to all!

MEMBER PROJECT SPOTLIGHT: CASINO URBAN DRAINAGE STUDY
|
|
Flume Engineering has provided the following article which outlines work undertaken in the Casino Urban Drainage Study for Richmond Valley Council in northern NSW.
“We are on the front foot of available technology and have utilised the InfoWorks ICM software for the Quality Assurance stage of this project. With this software we have been able to rapidly assess, inspect and quality assure Council’s asset data, and convert all relevant and required information to a suitable standard for importation to the hydrodynamic TUFLOW
model.
With the 3D capabilities ICM created an easy to see process of the exact issues in Council’s data and was able to be actioned on the spot. Flag systems within the software also made the QA process trackable via colour coding for data that needed to be action, data that was modified/assumed, and data that did not need alterations.
To adapt the new Australian Rainfall and Runoff 2016, Flume Engineering developed state of the art methodologies to ensure best management practices and the most recent available data was implemented into the project.”
For more on the methodologies used read the full article on the FMA website.
